Jocko Willink is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL who was a Lieutenant Commander, Silver Star and Bronze Star recipient, combat veteran, author of multiple books, and podcaster. His message is about motivation. No excuses are acceptable. As an ASVAB tutor, I meet students with a wide range of motivation levels. When I first starting teaching my ASVAB prep course, I used to think I could judge how well someone would do on the ASVAB based on their previous score. After years of providing help to students in ASVAB math, arithmetic, reading, and vocabulary, I realize that is no longer true. Motivation and the will to succeed is more powerful in determining success than one’s previous score. I have met some of the most inspiration people in tutoring. I met students who had to overcome financial troubles, family struggles, injuries, weight issues, difficulty in achieving the score they wanted, and more. In life, talk will only get you so far. Action is what really counts. As Jocko Willink says, “The only thing that matters is that you actually do. So: Do.”
