Is ASVAB Prep As Important As Physical Training For The Military?

In order to join the military, applicants need to be prepared for physical requirements and the written test requirements of the ASVAB.  You cannot have one without the other.  As an ASVAB tutor, I meet many people who are working toward achieving the required standards for the ASVAB.  In the course of tutoring my students, I hear stories of the intense physical training they go through to prepare for military life.  Over the years, I have seen some people make the mistake of placing too much emphasis on the physical training and not enough emphasis on studying for the ASVAB.  I have known people who could do countless pushups, pull-ups, and run the mile in under 6 minutes.  All those skills will not be enough to enlist without passing the ASVAB.  On the other hand, I have seen some people who place all their emphasis on the ASVAB and not enough emphasis on the physical training.  I have known people who passed the ASVAB and could not meet the physical requirements because of their weight or inability to pass the physical fitness challenges.  I believe balance is the key.  Both the physical requirements and the ASVAB are essentials.  In my ASVAB prep course,  I provide students with instruction for the 4 main parts of the ASVAB: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension.  As an ASVAB tutor, I focus very heavily on ASVAB Math help.  Tutors prepare the mind for the ASVAB.  Ask your recruiters for advice on how to help prepare your body for enlistment.  Many recruiting offices hold physical training events each week.  A great number of recruiting offices even hold physical training events multiple times a week. I like to know that my students are keeping up with the physical training offered by their recruiting office.  Physical fitness is a key part of military life.  To be successful in the military, one must be well rounded, fit in both mind and body.
