Flag Day, June 14

In working as an ASVAB tutor, I see the importance of taking time to acknowledge various American holidays and observances.  Today is one of those days.  Today is Flag Day.  Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777.  On this date, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution that the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternating red and white and the union be 13 stars, white on a blue background.  The 13 stars and stripes represented the 13 original colonies.  As the number of states grew, the flag changed to show the change.  Today’s flag has 13 stripes of alternating red and white to represent the original 13 colonies and 50 starts to represent the 50 states.  In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14 as Flag Day.
