Fact or Opinion on Elephants

In teaching my ASVAB prep course, I discuss the various types of questions that can appear on the Paragraph Comprehension section of the ASVAB.  Common questions include: main idea, detail, vocabulary, inference, cause and effect, author’s tone, and author’s purpose.  Another type of question that can measure reading comprehension skills is a fact and opinion question.  Today I present a Paragraph Comprehension question.

This question requires differentiating between fact or opinion.

The topic is elephants.

The question is:

Which one is an opinion?

  1. Elephants are the largest land animals.
  2. Elephants are beautiful animals.
  3. Elephants are mammals
  4. Elephants can weigh 200 pounds at birth.

Do you know how to differentiate between fact and opinion?  A fact is a true statement that can be proven.  An opinion includes someone’s beliefs, views or judgments.  I will present the answer and explanation tomorrow.
