Day of the Deployed
October 26
In working as an ASVAB tutor, I have chosen to recognize the United States military holidays, observances, and anniversaries. Today is one of those days. Today, October 26, is the Day of the Deployed. This holiday honors the United States military personnel deployed around the globe. The history of the National Day of the Deployed dates back to 2006 when Shelle Michaels Aberle, a North Dakota resident approached the North Dakota governor, John Hoeven, to support a proclamation for a day to honor those men and women actively serving in the military outside the United States. The date, October 26, was chosen as the date of observance because it was the birthday of Aberle’s cousin, U.S. Army Lt. Col. David Hosna, who was actively serving in Iraq at the time. In 2011, Hoeven was a United States Senator. He presented the resolution that designated October 26 as the National Day of the Deployed. His resolution passed unanimously. Since then, all 50 states have observed this holiday. On this day, take time to remember, honor and thank the dedication of our deployed military displays for our country.
