D-Day June 6, 1944

As an ASVAB tutor, I mention a number of military holidays, observances and anniversaries on my blog. Today, June 6 is D-Day.  D-Day occurred on June 6, 1944.  It marked the beginning of the end of World War II.  On this day, the Allied forces invaded northern France through beach landings in Normandy.  The Battle of Normandy lasted from June 1944 to August 1944.  This battle led to the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control.  The codename for this battle was Operation Overlord.  On June 6, 1944, about 156,000 American, British, and Canadian military troops landed on five beaches along 50 miles of the coast of Normandy in France.  This invasion is remembered as one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history.  By the end of August 1944, all of northern France was freed from Nazi control. D-Day is known as the beginning of the end of the war in Europe.
