Coast Guard Birthday, August 4
In working as an ASVAB tutor, I choose to make posts about the military holidays, observances, and anniversaries. Today, August 4, is the Coast Guard’s birthday. The Coast Guard was founded on August 4, 1790, under the rule of President Washington. On this date in history, Congress authorized construction of 10 vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling, and protect the collection of federal revenue. The Coast Guard was originally known as the Revenue Cutter Service. Its name was changed to the Coast Guard in 1915 when the Revenue Cutter Service was merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service to form a single maritime service. This new service, known as the Coast Guard, had the goal of safety of life and sea and the enforcement of the nation’s maritime laws. In current times the Coast Guard manages the following major operational mission programs: maritime law enforcement, maritime response, maritime prevention, maritime transportation system management, maritime security operations, and defense operations.
