Paragraph Comprehension
In my review of Paragraph Comprehension in my ASVAB prep course, I discuss the different types of questions that can appear. The various types of questions include main idea, detail, vocabulary, inference, cause and effect, author’s tone, and author’s purpose.
Today I present a Paragraph Comprehension question on author’s purpose.
Author’s purpose is the reason the author wrote the piece.
The question is:
What is the author’s main purpose in writing an advertisement for cars?
A. To persuade
B. To inform
C. To entertain
D. To contradict
When you think about an advertisement for cars, what would be the main purpose for writing the piece? The purpose of persuading someone is to influence them. The purpose of informing someone is to present them with facts. The purpose of entertaining someone is to amuse them, scare them, or capture their interest. The purpose of contradiction is to say one thing and then say the opposite. Which one seems like the best answer?
I will present the answer and explanation tomorrow.
