Arithmetic Reasoning

The topic of converting fractions, decimals, and percentages is one of the many topics I cover in reviewing Arithmetic Reasoning in my ASVAB prep course.  Yesterday I presented a question requiring converting a mixed number into an improper fraction.  Do you know how to convert a mixed number into an improper fraction.

The question is: What is 3  1/6 when written as an improper fraction?

In order to change a mixed number to an improper fraction, it is necessary to multiply the denominator by the whole number and add the numerator.

In converting 3  1/6, to an improper fraction, multiply 6 x 3 = 18 and add 1 to become 19.

The denominator remains 6.

3  1/6 as an improper fraction becomes 19/6.
