Signed Numbers

Yesterday I posted a question about adding signed numbers.  A number of students in my ASVAB prep course need to review signed numbers.  Signed numbers are very important for a number of types of questions on the ASVAB.  As an ASVAB tutor, I make the review of signed numbers a priority.  It is important in working with polynomials in algebra, working with PEMDAS or order of operations, and even some word problems.  So if you are looking for help with ASVAB math, make sure you are solid with basic operations for signed numbers.

-8 + 5 = -3

I tell my students if the signs are different subtract and keep the sign of the bigger number.

8 minus 5 is 3, and since the 8 is negative the answer is -3.

How did you do?
