Armed Forces Day, May 18

In my role as an ASVAB tutor, I make sure to write about the wide array of military holidays that exist in the United States.  One of these holidays is Armed Forces Day.  Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May.  Today, May 18, is Armed Forces Day.  President Harry S. Truman was the leader in the promoting the idea to create one holiday for people to honor our military members for their service to our county.  On August 31, 1949, the Secretary of Defense, Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day.  This day was meant to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force Days.  Today this day pays tribute to all the current branches of the military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, Air National Guard, Coast Guard, and Space Force.  Armed Forces Day is the proper day to honor all the men and women currently serving in the United States military as well as those who have served and sacrificed to defend our freedom.
