Arithmetic Reasoning

In working as an ASVAB tutor, I see the importance of presenting an in-depth review of the Arithmetic Reasoning section of the ASVAB.  Word problems can be challenging questions for many students. Yesterday I presented an Arithmetic Reasoning question that covers the skill of time.

The question asks:

Jessica worked a total of 42 hours in 5 days.  What was the average amount of hours that she worked each day?

  1. 8 hours 2 minutes
  2. 8 hours 15 minutes
  3. 8 hours 24 minutes
  4. 8 hours 30 minutes

To solve this problem, it is necessary to divide 42 by 5.

42 divided by 5 is 8 2/5 hours.

To find the correct answer to this question, it is necessary to change the fraction into minutes

An hour has 60 minutes

2/5 needs to be set equal to x/60 to figure out the minutes

2/5 = x/60

Cross multiply and solve for x.

2 x 60 = 5x

120 = 5x

Divide by 5

24 = x

The correct answer is choice C. 8 hours and 24 minutes.
