Arithmetic Reasoning

As an ASVAB tutor, I make sure to cover measurement as one of the subtopics that I review in helping my students prepare for the Arithmetic Reasoning section of the test.

Yesterday I presented an Arithmetic Reasoning problem that deals with measurement.

The question is:

If a piece of wood is 8ft 4 in. long and needs to be cut into 4 pieces, how long is each piece?

  1. 2 ft
  2. 2 ft 1 in.
  3. 2 ft 2 in.
  4. 2 ft 4 in.

In order to solve this problem, it is essential to know how many inches are in a foot.

There are 12 inches in a foot.  First 8ft 4 inches needs to be converted into inches.

To change feet to inches, the 8 ft needs to be multiplied by 12.

8 x 12 = 96

8 ft is 96 inches.

8ft 4 inches is 4 inches more than 96 inches.

96 inches + 4 inches = 100 inches.

100 inches divided by 4 = 25 inches.

25 inches needs to be converted back to feet.

To change inches back to feet, divide by 12.

25 divided by 12 is 2 with 1 left over.

25 inches is 2 ft 1 inch.

The correnct answer is choice B. 2ft 1 in.
