Arithmetic Reasoning Question

As an ASVAB tutor, I see that Arithmetic Reasoning is a section of the ASVAB that many of my students find challenging.  Arithmetic Reasoning is the section of the ASVAB that contains word problems.  I wrote a book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Arithmetic Reasoning Study Guide where I review various subtopics in Arithmetic Reasoning.  Among those subtopics are long division, long multiplication, decimals, fractions, percents, proportions, ratios, miles per gallon, distance, rate, etc.  The list goes on.  Today I present an Arithmetic Reasoning question.  The question is on division with decimals.  Of the four basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals, I feel that my students struggle the most with division of decimals.  They often make an error in the placement of the decimal.

The question is:

What is 90 divided by .30?

  1. 3
  2. 30
  3. 300
  4. 3000

Do you know the proper steps to follow when dividing by a number that has a decimal?

I will present the answer and explanation tomorrow.
