Arithmetic Reasoning
The topic of patterns and sequences is a topic that can appear on the math part of the ASVAB. I cover this topic in my book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Arithmetic Reasoning Study Guide. Some of my students have difficulty with the concept of patterns and sequences. I review the necessary skills to master this skill. I find that once they grasp the concept, it is fairly easy for them to master this skill.
Yesterday I presented an Arithmetic Reasoning question on patterns and sequences.
The question is:
What number comes next in the pattern:
8, -2, 3, -7, -2, _____
A. -12
B. -8
C. 8
D. 12
To answer a question about patterns and sequences, it is important to analyze the pattern from one number to the next.
Do not look at the overall picture. Look from one step to the next.
From 8 to -2 went down by 10.
From -2 to 3 went up by 5.
From 3 to -7 went down by 10.
From -7 to -2 went up by 5.
The pattern is down 10, up 5, down 10, up 5.
The next number will go down by 10.
-2 – 10 = -12.
The answer is Choice A. -12
