Arithmetic Reasoning

In my ASVAB prep course, I focus on the topic of fractions in my classes that cover Arithmetic Reasoning.  In adding and subtracting fractions, it is essential to find a common denominator.  You do not need to find a common denominator when multiplying fractions.  My book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Arithmetic Reasoning Study Guide reviews the necessary steps for performing the four basic operations with fractions: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Yesterday I presented an Arithmetic Reasoning question.

The skill is multiplication of fractions.

The question is:

Solve

5/6 x 2/4 =

A. 5/12

B. 1/2

C. 7/24

D. 5/6

To multiply fractions, there is no need to find a common denominator.

It simply involves multiplying the numerators and multiplying the denominators.

5/6 x 2/4 = 10/24

10/24 can be reduced.

Since 10 and 24 are both even numbers, they can both be divided by 2.

10/24 = 5/12

The final answer is 5/12

The correct answer is Choice A. 5/12
