Arithmetic Reasoning Question on Miles Per Gallon

In working on teaching my ASVAB prep course, I place a strong emphasis on the two math sections of the ASVAB.  The two math sections are Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge.  There are a number of different subtopics I review for the two math sections.  Today I present an Arithmetic Reasoning question on miles per gallon.  Miles per gallon is one of the many types of questions that can appear on the Arithmetic Reasoning section of the ASVAB.  Many of my students need to review the topic of miles per gallon. Some of my students assume it is a proportion problem.  Miles per gallon problems are not proportions.  It is a multi-step problem.

The question is:

Jack buys gas for $3.50 a gallon.  His car gets 20 mpg.  How much will a trip of 600 miles cost?

  1. $35.00
  2. $60.00
  3. $70.00
  4. $105.00

Do you know how to solve this problem?

I will present the answer and explanation tomorrow.
