Answer to Question on Miles Per Gallon

In working as an ASVAB tutor, I know that miles per gallon questions are one of the many types of questions that can appear on the Arithmetic Reasoning section of the ASVAB.  Yesterday I presented an Arithmetic Reasoning question on miles per gallon.  Miles per gallon is one of the many types of questions that can appear on the Arithmetic Reasoning section of the ASVAB.

The question is:

Jack buys gas for $3.50 a gallon.  His car gets 20 mpg.  How much will a trip of 600 miles cost?

  1. $35.00
  2. $60.00
  3. $70.00
  4. $105.00

To solve this problem, there are a few steps to solve.

There are 3 pieces of information that need to be used to solve the problem.

Cost is $3.50 per gallon.

Mileage is 20 mpg.

Trip is 600 miles.

In this situation, there are 2 amounts that are numbers and one is a money amount.

Divide number into number and multiply by money.

600 divided by 20 = 30.

Then multiply $3.50 by 30.

$3.50 x 30 = $105.00

Did you know how to solve this problem?
