Arithmetic Reasoning Answer

In working as an ASVAB tutor, I see the great need to review fractions in my review of Arithmetic Reasoning. In my experience, I have seen that the difference between knowing fractions and not knowing fractions can affect your ASVAB score by 8-14 points.  Many of my ASVAB prep students need to review fractions to master Arithmetic Reasoning.

Yesterday I presented an Arithmetic Reasoning question.

This question is addition of fractions.

The question is:

Solve

5/8 + 1/4 =

A . 6/12

B. 7/8

C. 1/2

D. 5/32

To add these fractions, it is necessary to find a common denominator.

The common denominator for 8 and 4 is 8.

5/8 can remain 5/8

1/4 needs to become a fraction with a denominator of 8.

1/4 = x/8

Since 4 times 2 is 8, you also need to multiply the top number of 1 by 2 to find an equivalent fraction.

1/4 = 2/8

Now I can add the fractions

5/8 + 2/8 = 7/8

The correct answer is Choice B. 7/8.
