Arithmetic Reasoning Answer

Reviewing fractions is an important part of my ASVAB prep course.  My book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Arithmetic Reasoning Study Guide reviews 15 different subtopics in Arithmetic Reasoning.  One of these topics is fractions.  I make sure to review a variety of skills in fractions including changing an improper fraction to a mixed number, changing a mixed number to an improper fraction, reducing fractions, adding fractions, subtracting fraction, multiplying fractions, and dividing fractions.

Yesterday I presented an Arithmetic Reasoning question.

The question is on dividing fractions.

The question is:

8/10 divided by 1/4 =

A. 2/5

B. 2  1/10

C. 3  1/4

D. 3  1/5

To divide fractions, you do not need to find a common denominator.

There are a few steps to divide fractions.

Keep, change, flip.

Keep the first fraction.

Change division to multiplication.

Flip the second fraction.

8/10 divided by ¼

8/10 x 4/1 =

32/10

Reduce the mixed number

Change it to an improper fraction.

32/10 = 3  2/10.

3  2/10 can be reduced to 3  1/5.

The answer is Choice D. 3  1/5
