Answer to Yesterday’s Problem on Subtraction of Fractions

Yesterday I presented a problem involving subtracting fractions.  Do you know how to subtract fractions?  Many of the students I meet as an ASVAB tutor struggle in working with fractions.  I remind my students of the importance of knowing how to work with fractions before they take the ASVAB.  In order to add and subtract fractions, it is necessary to find a common denominator before adding or subtracting.

6/9- 1/3 =

The common denominator would be 9

6/9 remains 6/9

1/3 becomes 3/9

6/9 – 3/9 = 3/9

3/9 reduces to 1/3

The answer is 1/3.
