Arithmetic Reasoning

Yesterday I presented a question about miles per gallon.  Jack buys gas for $3.50 a gallon.  His car gets 20 mpg.  How much will a trip of 600 miles cost?  Do you know how to solve this problem?

As an ASVAB tutor, I see the great importance of reviewing miles per gallon questions with the students in my ASVAB prep course.  This question is not solved as a proportion.

Gas costs $3.50 per gallon.

The car gets 20 mpg.

The trip is 600 miles.

There are 3 values in this problem.  Two of them are numbers, and one is a money amount.

Divide the number into the number.

Then multiply by the money.

600 divided by 20 = 30

Then multiply $3.50 by 30 = $105.00

The cost would be $105.00

Did you solve this problem correctly?
