Arithmetic Reasoning

Yesterday I presented a ratio question.  If there is a 6:4 ratio of chickens to ducks and there are 36 chickens, how many ducks are there?

In working as an ASVAB tutor, I place a strong emphasis on the importance of knowing how to solve proportions and ratios.

This problem is a ratio problem that can be solved as a proportion.

Chickens/ducks = chickens/ducks

6/4 = 36/x

Cross multiply and solve for x.

6x = 144

Divide by 6.

144 divided by 6 = 24

There are 24 ducks.
