Word Knowledge

Yesterday I presented a question about a root word.  The root word was pend-.  Do you know what the root word pend- means? Pend- means hanging. Many words have the Latin root

pend-.  A pendant is a hanging necklace.  A pendulum is a weight that is suspended from a pivot so it can swing freely. Suspend means to prevent temporarily or to hang something from somewhere.  Knowing the Latin root pend- helps people to understand the meaning of a number of words. As an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students that Latin and Greek roots are helpful in expanding one’s knowledge of vocabulary and are helpful in increasing the score on the Word Knowledge section of the ASVAB.
