Answer to Mathematics Knowledge Question on Y-Intercept

Mathematics Knowledge

Yesterday I presented a question about the y-intercept of a line.

What is the y-intercept of the line y = 2x + 4?

In working as an ASVAB tutor, I include a question like this in my review of the subtopic, angles, and slope.  Geometry is an important part of the Mathematics Knowledge section of the course, and angles and slope are part of geometry. The line that is presented, y = 2x + 4 is presented in the slope-intercept form of a line.  The standard slope-intercept form of a line is

y = mx + b.  The m value represents the slope.  The slope is the steepness of the line. The slope of this line is 2.  The b value represents the y-intercept.  The y-intercept is the point where the line crossed the y-axis.  The y-intercept is 4.  Did you know how to find the y-intercept of this line?
