Answer to Math Knowledge Question on Rounding

As an ASVAB tutor, I know the importance of reviewing place value with the students in my ASVAB prep course.  A number of my students exhibit

confusion when it comes to rounding.  In order to help improve their ASVAB math scores, I make sure to explain how to round numbers.  Rounding

is a form of estimation.  This example asks you to round to the nearest hundred.

The problem is 1,476.543

The question is which number is in the hundreds place?

4 is in the hundreds place.

To round to the nearest hundred, you need to look to the number to the right of4.

The number to the right of 4 is 7.

You need to see if the number to the right of 4 is 5 or greater or less than 5.

If the number is 5 or greater, 4 needs to be rounded up to 5.

If the number is less than 5,  4 needs to stay the same.

In this case, since the number to the right of 4 is 7, it is greater than 5.

Therefore, the 4 needs to be rounded up to 5.

1,476.543 rounded to the neared hundred would be 1500.

Did you know how to solve this?  If not, make sure you review rounding.
