As someone who tutors for the ASVAB, I make sure to remind my students of the meaning of author’s purpose in my ASVAB prep course.  There are three common examples of author’s purpose.  I tell people to think of “PIE” which stands for persuade, inform, and entertain.  These are three main types of author’s purpose.  Persuade is when the author tries to convince you about something whether what car to buy, what restaurant to eat at, or what movie to watch.  Inform is the presentation of facts, possibly scientific or historical facts.  Entertain is when a  story is written to be interesting, funny, scary, etc.  Even though I spend a great deal of time providing help on ASVAB math, it is important to know the different components involved in the reading and vocabulary sections
