Yesterday I presented the prefix mille-. Do you know what the prefix mille- means?
The Latin prefix mille- means thousand. There are 1000 millimeters in a meter. There are 1000 milligrams in a gram. Millennia or millennium is a period of a thousand years. Millennial is a term for people who are reaching young adulthood in the early 21st century. Millipede means 1000 legs. A millipede is a creature that has hundreds of legs, a thousand legs is an exaggeration, but the direct meaning of the word means a thousand legs. As an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students of the importance of knowing the meaning of the Latin and Greek prefixes for numbers.
