ASVAB Math

Yesterday I presented a question about a pattern.

Could you identify what comes next in the pattern?

4, -4, 0, -8, -4, _____

In working as an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students of the importance of reviewing patterns and sequences.  Patterns and sequences is one of the 15 subtopics I cover in my ASVAB prep course.  To figure out what number comes next, it is important to pay attention to the pattern from one number to the next.

4, -4, 0, -8, -4, _____

From 4 to -4 was a decrease of 8.

From -4 to 0 was an increase of 4.

From 0 to -8 was a decrease of 8.

From -8 to -4 was an increase of 4.

The pattern is down 8, up 4, down 8, up 4.

The next number would go down by 8

-4 minus 8 = -12.

The entire pattern is 4, -4, 0, -8, -4, -12.

Did you know how to complete this pattern?
