Mathematics Knowledge

Yesterday I presented an algebra problem that consisted of a fraction.

The question was: If 5/6x = 30, what does x equal?

As an ASVAB tutor, algebra with fractions is one of the 15 subtopics I cover in the Mathematics Knowledge section of the ASVAB.  I remind my students that this problem is not as challenging as it seems.

To solve the problem 5/6x = 30, it is necessary to get rid of the fraction in front of the variable.

When there is fraction in front of a variable, you need to multiply by the reciprocal on both sides of the equal sign.

5/6 = 30

6/5 times 5/6 x= 30/1 times 6/5

6/5 times 5/6 cancels out leaving only x

x = 180/5

x = 36

The answer is 36.

Did you know how to solve this problem?
