Arithmetic Reasoning

Yesterday I presented a percent question.  If a car costs $10,000 and is on sale for $8,000, what is the percent discount?

In my role as an ASVAB tutor, I teach my students the formula for percent increase and decrease.  Today’s question is about finding percent discount.

The formula is difference/original = %/100

Difference means to subtract the 2 amounts.

$10,000 – $8,000 = $2,000

$2,000 goes on the top of the fraction

The original price of the car is $10,000.

$10,000 goes on the bottom.

2,000/10,000 = x/100

Cross multiply and solve for x

10,000x = 200000

Cancel out 4 zeros on each side.

x = 20

The answer is a 20% discount.
