Arithmetic Reasoning

Yesterday I presented a question on division of fractions.

The question was,

What is 8/10  divided by 1/4?

I remind the students that I tutor for the ASVAB of the importance of knowing how to perform the 4 basic operations for fractions.

In order to divide fractions, it is not necessary to find a common denominator.

Make sure you keep, change, flip to divide fractions.

Keep the first fraction, change division to multiplication and flip the second fraction over.

8/10 ¸ 1/4

8/10 x 4/1 = 32/10

32/10 is an improper fraction that needs to be reduced by dividing the denominator into the numerator.

The answer is 3  2/10 which can be reduced to 3  1/5.
