Word Knowledge

In my ASVAB book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension Study Guide, I review key ASVAB vocabulary as well as Latin and Greek prefixes, root words, and suffixes.

Yesterday I presented a question for the Word Knowledge section of the ASVAB.

The question is about the meaning of the prefix ab-.

Yesterday I presented the fact that there are many words in the English language with the prefix ab-.

Here are some of these words: abnormal, absent, abduct, abscond, abdicate, abvolate, aberrant.

Abnormal means not normal (away from being normal).

Absent means being away from a place.

Abduct means to lead away.

Abscond means to leave from a place secretly and hurriedly.

Abdicate means to formally give up power, to lead one’s responsibility

Abvolate means to fly away

Aberrant means to wander away from the accepted standard

The question is:

What does the prefix ab- mean?

A. Add

B. Away from

C. Toward

D. Alone

The prefix ab- means away.  The correct answer is Choice B. Away from.
