Yesterday I presented a question about author’s purpose. The question asked which type of piece was written with the purpose of persuading someone.

Four different pieces were presented.

Do you know which one could be a persuasive piece?

  1. A science article about zebras
  2. A conservationist’s piece about preserving trees.
  3. A story about a girl and her dog.
  4. Facts about the Civil War.

The one that could be a persuasive piece is choice B, a conservationist’s piece about preserving trees.  A conservationist wants to help preserve the environment and save trees from being cut down.

In my ASVAB prep course, I present the fact that persuasive pieces are one of the main types of author’s purpose.  The students I tutor for the ASVAB are taught about the different types of questions that appear on the Paragraph Comprehension section.  Even though I spend far more time on ASVAB math problems, I make sure to address the types of questions found on the Paragraph Comprehension section.
